Dear Homecoming Queen

Dear Homecoming Queen,

I hope you know that this changes nothing. This is not your identity. This is not your one-way ticket to popularity or to the guy you’ve been seriously crushing on since freshman year. This is not an amazing experience where all of a sudden people look at you different or treat you differently. It almost seems like it never happened because life just keeps moving on.

You get all these ideas about what it’s going to feel like if you win. You think that everything said above will magically come true & that your whole world will change dramatically. You think that you will feel better about yourself because the student body picked YOU. YOU are the chosen one…

But, in reality, nothing changes inside. You feel the same. You might feel great about yourself for maybe a couple of hours, but in reality, you know that absolutely everything goes back to normal eventually. You still wish, however, that it would bring you more joy, peace, happiness, likability, identity, love, acceptance, etc. But none of that is true. It is a lie that the enemy tells us to try to fill our Jesus hole with something that is not Him & everyone knows that a square cannot fit into a circle shaped hole.

Homecoming Queen, this is NOT your identity. No one sees it like it’s your identity, but you build up the excitement so much, only for it to be torn down as soon as you are being crowned. Your friends treat you the same, and your family will probably make “Your Highness” jokes constantly.

You put on a brave face like it meant the world to you, but you know deep inside that it did absolutely nothing for you. It didn’t change you, who you are, or how people see you. God also doesn’t look at you any different. He just sees your pride & you trying to fill His space with an earthly title of High School Homecoming Queen. How silly is that?

Do you know what He calls you instead? He calls you Daughter (2 Corinthians 6:18). He calls you Loved (1 John 4:10, 16; Jeremiah 31:3; Lamentations 3:22-23). He calls you Accepted (John 6:37; Ephesians 1:3-6). He calls you Beautiful (Song of Solomon 4:7; Ephesians 2:10, Isaiah 61:3). He calls you Princess (Psalm 45:13 NASB). He calls you Chosen (1 Peter 2:9; John 15:16; Ephesians 1:4). He calls you Righteous (Proverbs 28:1). He calls you Perfect (Hebrews 10:14). He calls you a Saint [NOT a sinner] (Psalm 16:3; Psalm 34:9). He calls you Redeemed (Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:18-19). [You can read a few more here on my Who am I in Christ page.]

So Homecoming Queen, let’s review for a quick second. Your identity is not created by the positive or negative things that you do, say, act, or achieve. It’s not because of who you are. Your identity was created by God before your parents even knew that you existed. Your identity is special & the Creator of the universe, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Lover & Pursuer of humankind, Prince of Peace, Abba Father, Jehovah Jireh, Emmanuel, Savior, & Yahweh gave it to you. THAT fact should give you so much life & meaning that the very fact that you won something so insignificant is just a bonus in life because you already know your identity.

With so much love,

Rebekah 🙂
